stellar classifictaion

Seeing as Oli and I need to categorise objects in space we have assigned to certain areas of research. I've got stars & oli will be researching planets within our solar system.

In astronomy, stellar classification categorises stars in terms of their spectral characteristics. This allows for a measurement of it's photosphere's temperature (atomic excitation most prominant in light - ionization in it's photosphere)

Stars are mainly classified using the letters O, B, A, F, G, K, & M. This is often remembered using the mnemonic "Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me" or "Oh Boy An F Grade Kills Me"

Traditionally these are what the stars are called:
O - blue
B - blue / white
A - white
F - white / yellow
G - yellow
K - orange
M - red

In addition, the Morgan-Keenan system adds another measurement that represents the range between two star categories using the numbers 0-9. Each unit represents a tenth eg A2 would be 2 tenths between A0 & F0. Lower numbered stars in the catagory are brighter.

Furthermore, using the Morgan-Keenan system, numerical values which portray the absorption lines of a star. This is therefore a general measure of the size of the star, and the total luminosity output.

Star classes:
i - supergiants
ii - bright giants
iii - giants
iv - subgiants
v - dwarfs / main sequence

Our sun, for example, is classified as G2V which would mean it's a yellow 2 tenths towards orange main sequence star.

Using this stellar classification as catagories will allow us to explore and apply unique print processes and finishes onto the prints.....

Paul McCartney

YES were commissioned to conceive and design a series of key McCartney re-releases. This involved creative direction, branding, packaging, editorial consultancy and publication design.

I think the visual aesthetic for this works really nicely. A range of material and stock has been used here and I definitely aim to experiment with this within the Electronica brief as I wish to do a publication on the history of electronic music. I wanted to play around with designs in which I could feature audio cd's with the journey from old electronic music to the current and this has definitely inspired me in terms of experimentation.

success

The fashion students have come to a decision & have chosen our group to design & promote for the graduate fashion show & exhibition! I'm very very happy as I know this brief has so much potential & I plan to fully explore the concept & designs to make sure the fashion students are more than satisfied with chosing us to collaborate with.

damaged file

I've been working on a range of poster & flyer designs for the fashion show pitch and annoyingly the InDesign document somehow became damaged & I've lost all of the designs...I think it's due to the fact that my laptop died whilst the document was open lastnight. Luckily james has also been working on designs so we should be fine for the pitch!

flannaman

James Flanagan was invited into the group today as he was keen to get involved in the fashion collaboration for the show & exhibition and we felt with his type knowledge he'd be a nice addition to the group!

fashion show pitch

Myself, Kirsty Fruin and Liv Chapman have grouped together in a collaboration for the leeds college of art fashion show.

We got together to discuss concepts and decided that 'old meets new' was an appropriate concept for the overall branding. Seeing as the show is set at Canal Mills, which is an old textile mill, we wanted to juxtapose the old and the new with the fashion designers putting on a show to display their new garments.

In terms of a colour scheme I thought balck & white/greyscale contrasted with a bright spot colouring would not only sit in with the concept but create a sophisticated design aesethetic with a new fresh feel to it. We decided on a lime green as we felt it was gender neutral & would look visually appealing against the greyscale designs.

We wanted to keep it minimal and yet pay attention to the minor details of the designs. We had a meeting and discussed ideas for the deliverables. Seeing as the show is all about the students themselves, I thought it would be a nice idea to have a perforated area of the notebook where professionals can tear off the students contact details. We thought using threading/stitching using the specified spot colour, ontop of some of the designs such as the invites would be quite striking and brings in the context into the designs. In terms of photography we thought we would keep a 'sneak preview' sort of visual so that it attracts peoples attention & pulls people in.

yohji

Yes collaborated with Peter Saville on the art direction and design for the fashion exhibition for Yohji Yamamoto's work. The brief consisted of 192 page case-bound book, print campaign, exhibition graphics, private view invites, exhibition guide & signage around the V&A.

I really like the general aesthetic of the project with a minimal & sophisticated appearance along with the a burst of colour & creative imagery. In terms of context for the fashion show it's definitely made me think about the visual appearance of the show & exhibition and consider the aesthetic which we'll be going for.

LEEDS COLLEGE OF ART
GRADUATE FASHION SHOW 2013 LIVE BRIEF

Visual identity for Leeds Graduate Fashion Show 2013.

INFORMATION ON THE EVENT

The third year fashion students are beginning to organise their annual fashion show for 2013. We would like to give one/or a collaborative group of the third year graphics students the opportunity to get on board and come up with an innovative and dynamic concept for the graphics for the event.

In previous years the two fashion pathways (fashion design and fashion innovation) have organised two separate events, however this year we will be organising a joint event consisting of a fashion show and exhibition at the same venue. This year we will be hold the event at the newly opened Canal Mills. Canal Mills is an old textile factory recently converted into an events space. We would like the history and character of the space to be used as direction for the concept of the graphics. The link for the website is shown below

briefs..

The areas of graphic design that I intend to focus on include identity, branding and promotion. I aim to explore these areas with design for music, fashion, science and photography as they’re all areas in which I have a strong interest.

Taking this into consideration, I've been looking for briefs that I think not only will be appropriate to my practice, but that I'll enjoy doing and taking them to their full potential.

So far my chosen briefs include:

Electronica
- Create an identity and promote for the coming exhibition Oramics to Electronica. The exhibition is a discovery of the hostory of electronic music from the 1950s until today, held at the Science Museum, South Kensington, London.

Fashion Show
- Looking at branding & promotion for the graduate fashion show & exhibition. Really keen on the idea of this brief as I think it has so much potential both visually and conceptually. This is a collaboration with myself, Kirsty Fruin & Olivia Chapman.

Fashion Yearbook
 - Pitching for both the fashion show & the fashion yearbook makes a lot of sense as they would coincide harmoniously in terms of aesthetics. Again, it would be a collaboration with the people above.

Space
- Design a series of informative posters and zines exploring the vast differences in size, temperatures, mass and distance in the universe. This brief will focus on print, stock & finishes. This brief really excites me as, not only does the universe fascinate me, but I think it's the perfect opportunity to explore & perfect the print processes. This is a collaboration with Oliver Cassell.

Myles Harvey
- A photography visual identity brief. mainly photographing at house/electro/garage nights, I must consider the aesthtic of the branding making it appropriate to the audience.
